Frontline Patrols
Patrol officers provide around-the-clock patrols throughout the CBRM, keeping citizens in our communities safe. Often the first responders dispatched to a complaint, patrol officers respond to incidents including assaults, thefts, vandalism, threats, frauds, motor vehicle accidents, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, weapons complaints and domestic issues. Patrol officers are responsible for enforcing criminal code offences, provincial statutes and municipal by-laws resulting from their duties, and are often subpoenaed to court to testify as part of investigations.
Communications Dispatch Centre
The Cape Breton Regional Police Service and other emergency services are supported through the Enhanced 911 system from the Regional Communications Centre. The Communications Centre receives 911 calls regularly and dispatches them to the appropriate service to deal with these emergencies appropriately. Cape Breton also has support from the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office (EMO); which is responsible for planning, response, preparedness training, and search and rescue operations.
First Nations Policing
The Cape Breton Regional Police Service was chosen to police the Membertou First Nation in 2007, delivering a collaborative and interactive approach, focusing on the needs of the community. With an officer on duty in the community at all times, the CBRPS continues to achieve some of the fastest response times in the community.
Since its implementation, police have received a tremendous amount of community support for the work that they have done.
CBRPS officers have built a trusting relationship with the community by getting to know the people who live there and learning about the Mi’kmaq culture - some officers have also learned the Mi’kmaq language. Police have partnered with the Membertou community to establish many programs, including Neighbourhood Watch, Block Parents and the Membertou Pli’smenaq Boys and Girls Club. Citizens show pride and ownership in these programs and a dedication to continue supporting a partnership with the CBRPS
