At approximately 9:00 PM, Cape Breton Regional Police patrol officers in New Waterford observed a GMC Jimmy traveling down Ellsworth Avenue at a high rate of speed; police stopped the vehicle and upon checking its license plates discovered it to be involved in a reported theft of gas from Membertou earlier in the evening. Police also noted propane tanks in the vehicle, as well as further evidence indicating the possibility the tanks were taken from a secure location.

Police arrested both men for the theft of gas, and through further investigation, were able to connect the propane tanks to a storage cabinet at Broadway Convenience Store in Whitney Pier.

Both were released on a Promise to Appear in Sydney Provincial Court. The 36-year-old driver of the vehicle, from New Waterford, faces charges of: Theft (x2), Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Possession of Break In Instruments, and a Breach of Probation. The 22-year-old passenger of the vehicle, from Glace Bay, also faces charges of Theft and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.
