Police make arrests, lay charges for prostitution activity

Cape Breton Regional Police made the arrests over the course of several weeks; all were released on a Promise to Appear in Sydney Provincial Court on October 5, 2015. A complete list of individuals charged is below.

The investigation, led by the Community Safety Enforcement Unit and with assistance from the Street Crime Unit and Patrols – involved months of increased visibility and foot patrols as well as dedicated investigative resources, including the use of undercover police officers and other specialized tools and techniques. The CBRPS also engaged community partners with Mental Health and Addictions Services, Probation Services and local First Nations, to address the issue from all angles, including the many circumstances leading individuals to become involved in prostitution activity.

“We are very pleased to have made such a significant impact with the 27 individuals charged so far, but our work is far from over” said Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Peter McIsaac. “We know there are more individuals out there continually exploiting women; it’s something we will continue to take very seriously, and a criminal activity we will absolutely not tolerate.”

The charges are laid in accordance with new laws introduced through Bill C-36, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act.
