Police charge 18 more for prostitution activity in Sydney

August 10, 2018

A total of 18 men from throughout the CBRM face charges for Obtaining Sexual Services for Consideration as the result of ongoing and extensive investigation in response to continued prostitution activity in downtown Sydney. Cape Breton Regional Police made the arrests over a 6-week period; all were released on a Promise to Appear in Sydney Provincial Court, beginning on Monday, August 13th. A complete list of individuals charged is below.

The charges come as the result of several months of targeted efforts to address another rise in this ongoing problem, once again directly affecting residents and merchants in the downtown core and raising concerns for the safety of those involved. The Community Safety Enforcement Unit – with assistance from investigators and Patrol officers – led an extensive investigation to identify those participating in illegal activity. The extensive investigation – led by the Community Safety Enforcement Unit, with assistance from investigators and Patrol officers – involved the use of undercover police officers combined with other specialized tools and techniques to identify those involved in illegal activity.

“The object with an operation of this nature is to interrupt the illegal and dangerous activity that continues to disrupt our community,” said Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Peter McIsaac. “While we have made another significant impact with 18 more arrests, we know our work is far from over. There are more individuals out there exploiting women – and exploiting their vulnerable situations – which is something we take very seriously and absolutely will not tolerate.”

Police issued a combined total of more than 40 charges through the course of this operation; in addition to the 18 charges of Obtaining Sexual Services, officers charged others for Breaches of Previous Court Orders and other illegal activity witnessed while in the area, including Theft, Impaired Driving, Fraud and several Motor Vehicle infractions.
