At approximately 8:00 PM on January 15th, Cape Breton Regional Police responded to the area of Union and Brookland Streets, to reports of a disturbance between a taxi driver and a group of youths. Upon arrival, police learned that two taxi drivers had approached a group of youths whom they recognized as being responsible for evading taxi fare earlier in the weekend. When they confronted the group, one male youth revealed a knife, and then the youths all fled the area. Shortly after, patrol officers located 5 youth, ranging in age from 12 -14.
Upon further investigation, police identified two male youth responsible for three separate offences against the taxi drivers. A 12-year-old male was arrested with Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and a 13-year-old male was arrested with Theft, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Mischief and Fraud. Both were released, and will be referred to the Restorative Justice program for resolution.
