Female faces charges for false fundraisingJanuary 16, 2012 A New Waterford female faces charges of False Pretense in connection to a fake fundraising campaign over the weekend. The 19-year-old arrived at the Cape Breton Regional Police office in New Waterford this morning, admitting to selling tickets in the New Waterford area, under the name of Transition House. She was released on a Promise to Appear in Sydney Provincial Court in April. Cape Breton Regional Police issued a warning on January 14th about two females illegally canvassing for money on behalf of Transition House. The Transition House Foundation reported this activity to police after receiving calls from citizens inquiring about the validity of this door-to-door fundraising campaign. Police encourage any citizens who were approached as part of this false campaign to come forward with information that can assist with completing this investigation, including identification of the second female suspect. Police remind the public to protect themselves from fraudulent door-to-door soliciting by asking people to produce official identification or documentation relating to the organization or fundraising campaign they claim to represent. If citizens are unsure, police encourage them to confirm the fundraising activity with the organization before donating money and report any suspicious activity to police, by calling 563-5151 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 562-8477 or www.capebretoncrimestoppers.ca. |
